16. The Harrowing

“Karen?”

The ghastly apparition began to clear.

She was standing in the tunnel, ether-laced bullets at her feet. Drake was standing a short distance away, his eyes glowing slightly. His body was surrounded by an aura of amber light.

“You drifted off again,” he said.

She could taste copper in the back of her throat.

“Sorry. I think the equilibrium spell wore off while you were channeling.”

Drake shook his head, mouth open as though trying to pop his ears. The glowing in his eyes started to subside, along with the nimbus surrounding his body.

“Figured as much. Sorry, it got a bit wild back there. Too much power. I started seeing stuff myself. Some crazy shit. Looks like it got the job done though.”

He pointed down at the bullets, now glowing brilliant white.

Winter smiled.

“That’s perfect. The more power the better.”

She bent down and tentatively touched one of the bullets with the tip of her finger. It was cool to the touch, but her fingers tingled as they made contact, a slight etheric charge crawling up her arm.

“Okay, I’ll reload and set up the dynamo spell while we walk. We need to keep moving.”
